Shanghai in Brief

Shanghai, a municipality under the direct jurisdiction of the Central Government, is China's largest economic and industrial center. It is the largest harbor in China, a coastal city opened to the world and a well-known historical and cultural city. Located in the front fringe of the Yangtze Delta, Shanghai sits at the leading position in the Yangtze Valley & Yangtze Delta. Shanghai has a population of 14 million and covers a total area of 6, 341 square kilometers. Its Pudong New Area which is part of Shanghai's urban area covers 523 square kilometers. Most parts are within 15 kilometers from the city center. To date, the four major sub-districts of Pudong namely the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, the Jinqiao Export Processing Zone, the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone and the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park have been built into a certain scale. It is the right place for those who want to have the investment inspection and business tour.

Position & Climate

Lying in the middle of China's eastern coastline, Shanghai is situated at 34.14 degrees north latitude and 121.29 degrees east longitude. Neighbored with Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces on the west, it faces the East China Sea on the east and Hangzhou Bay on the south. The Yangtze River on its north flows into the sea. As a natural excellent port, Shanghai is the eastern gateway for the world to China. With four distinct seasons and abundant rainfall, Shanghai belongs to subtropical marine monsoon climate. The average annual temperature is 16℃. The average annual rainfall is 1, 200mm. The frost-free period is 230 days.

Tourism Capacity

By the end of 1999, Shanghai had 39 international travel services catering to overseas tourists. They boast a large number of guide-interpreters who can speak 23 foreign languages including English, Japanese, French, German and Korean. There were 140 star-rated hotels in Shanghai with a total of 32, 000 guest-rooms. Also Shanghai had more than 200 designated tourist restaurants, shops and service units.

Focusing on World Expo 2010 Shanghai China

World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, with the theme "Better City, Better Life." will be held from May 1 to Oct 31, 2010. The Expo Site covers a total area of 5.28 sq km, including the enclosed area and outside areas of support facilities. The Expo Site spans both sides of the Huangpu River, with 3.93 sq km in Pudong and 1.35 sq km in Puxi. Taking into account such factors as proper walking distance and perception of visitors, the master plan of Expo Shanghai puts forward a five-level structure of park, enclosed area, zones, groups and clusters. In addition, the main buildings in the “Park” such as China Pavilion, Theme Pavilions, Expo Boulevard, World Expo Centre, Expo Performance Centre will be kept permanently.

World Expo 2010 Shanghai China is the occasion for China to bring the world at home, and for the world to feel at home in China. It will also be a great event and a grand international gathering, offering a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Shanghai hopes to build a powerful and lasting pilot example of sustainable and harmonious urban living.
