    A Brief Introduction to the Inter-city Rail Transit Network Plan for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei in Bohai Sea-Rim Region, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta

    In March, 2005, the State Council examined and approved in principle the Inter-city Rail Transit Network Plan for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei in Bohai Sea-Rim Region, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, the contents of which are as following:

    Changchun: Third Phase of City Light Rail Starts Operation in 2011

    “Part of the underground structure and the main engineering works of the elevated rails of the third phase of the light rail project is to be completed by the end of the year, by which time, traffic congestion at Linhe Avenue will be relieved”, revealed Dong Xiaodong, deputy general manager of Changchun Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd. It is learnt that the third phase of the light rail project is going to be put into operation in 2011.

    Hangzhou:
    Two Cities to be Built up and down Binjiang District, with Metro Lines Connecting

    Two cities up and down Binjiang District will be built, with the northern one, bounded by Zhegan Railway, planned as Binjiang New City, and the southern one, centered in the Baima Lake, as an ecological and creativity city. With a planned area of 37.7 square kilometers, the former is positioned as a Creativity Hub of Hangzhou, an innovation and knowledge-based international new urban center that features knowledge, business, living and recreation.

    All-round Construction of Metro Line 2 Starts at Year End

    Suzhou metro Line 2 is the second light rail line approved by the state council. According to the plan, the line will be forming a cross with line 1 upon completion. According to the long-term planning for Suzhou railway networks, five lines, i.e, lines 1, 2, 3 and 4, and a branch of line 3 will run through the urban center. Extending a total of 135.3 kilometers, these lines will be dotted by 105 stations, forming an overall layout of intersecting parallels.

    Metro Line 11 Extends to Huaqiao, Kunshan, Joining Shanghai with Jiangsu

    It has been decided that Shanghai Metro Line 11 will be extended to Huaqiao, Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. Your correspondent has learnt that the city of Kunshan has set up a rail transit investment and development company to take charge of the project investment and financing issues, as part of the push to speed up the construction of the rail transit project.

    Shanghai Metro Line 19 to Chongming Expected to be Approved Next Year

    The applications for the planned southern extension to Shanghai metro Line 5, and for lines 19 and 20 are under assessment by the National Development and Reform Commission. The layout for the stations are broadly determined, with Nanqiao New Town (from the urban center) and Changxing Island (from Pudong) expected to be integrated into the urban rail transit network. Mr Zhou Bo, director of Shanghai Municipal Development and Reforming Committee reveals that “the applications are expected to be approved by the end of this year or the beginning of next year.”

    Jiangyin Considers Building Metro Lines in Near Future

    The transport conditions are vitally important for the future development of Jiangyin. A rail transit planning discussion session was held on the morning of October 10th in Jiangyin. Mr. Zhu Minyang, Party Secretary of Jiangyin, underlined the importance of awareness-raising for the role of a city-wide integrated transport system, notably light rails in promoting the development of Jiangyin and its integration into the Yangtze River Delta urban cluster.

    On May, 21th, news from the Zhengzhou Rail Transit Work Conference said that phase one construction of metro line 1 in the provincial capital will formally start on June, 6th.

    Beijing:
    Asia’s Biggest Metro Transfer Stop to be Built in Song Jia Zhuang, Fengtai

    Beijing will build a first-class metro network in Asia in the next few years. The Song Jia Zhuang stop in Fengtai under construction covers an area of 51,000 square meters, which equals that of 7 football fields. It will become the biggest metro transfer stop in Asia when put into operation in 2012. Passengers can transfer among Line 5, line 10 and Yi Zhuang line by then. According to the design plan, the rails of three lines are located at level 2 below ground. After completion of this project, the above and underground parts will be connected and the passengers can get to the transfer hall at level one below ground from level two by escalator. The Beijing Metro runs across the city and forms circle lines to constitute a network extending in all directions. (Source: Global Times, 5-14-2009)

    Metro Line 3 Invites Bidding for Geological Survey to Start Construction within the Year

    Metro line 3 linking Hankou and Dunkou expects construction to start soon. Yesterday, the Wuhan Metro Group has released the formal bidding notice for the geological survey of line 3, which signifies the formal startup of this project.
